Data Logger Explained

A data logger is a type of specialized electronic device that collects data from external as well as internal sensors within a user defined time period.

The phrase “datalogging” refers to the usage of a device to gather data from a sensor. In this manner, the data can be collected, processed, and recorded, after which the results can be produced.

Data loggers are frequently used in experiments and data monitoring systems when it is necessary to gather information quicker than a human could possibly do so, especially when the accuracy of the data is important.

A data logger can be applied for a wide range of measurements and can be used for collecting data from the most general-purpose equipment to highly specialized measurements of a single parameter. It is most commonly used for general purpose applications.  Data loggers, however, might continue to be fixed devices with a small set of adjustable parameters. In many data logging scenarios, electronic type dataloggers have largely replaced chart recorders.

  • A Data logger collects detailed information from an electronic sensing instrument over a required duration, usually performed at predetermined intervals.
  • There are various parameters a data logger can collect, for eg. Temperature, Sound Frequency, Vibration, Time, Light Intensity, Electrical Current, etc.
  • Data logger applications include: specific conditions like a warehouse, a production room, a refrigerator, a freezer, sterilize, etc.
  • A Data logger may be used as a stand-alone device or it can be connected to a computer.
  • The configuration of a data logger can include cables, several channels, or self-contained equipment.
  • A Data logger can be used to qualify environmental chambers, steam sterilizers, warehouses, and other controlled environments
  • Remember, when using a data logger, proper probe placement is an essential aspect of data collection.
